Both come from cattle raised primarily on pasture. The difference is how the cattle are finished in the final few months before harvest.

Finishing Process:

  • Grass Fed Grain Finished: Describes cattle that begin their lives on a grass-based diet but are fed grain during the final months before slaughter. Grain finishing increases energy intake, which enhances marbling and tenderness in the meat.
  • 100% Grass Fed: Describes cattle that eat only grass and forage for their entire lives, without any grain supplementation. Their diet consists of fresh pasture during the growing season and stored forage such as hay or silage in winter.

Flavor & Cooking:

  • Grass Fed Grain Finished: Has more marbling, which creates a richer flavor and a more tender, buttery texture. The added fat helps it stay juicy and makes it a bit more forgiving when cooking.
  • 100% Grass Fed: Is typically leaner, with a more pronounced, earthy flavor. Because it contains less fat, it has a slightly firmer texture and cooks a bit faster. It benefits from careful temperature control to avoid overcooking.
