Songbird Hill Farm

Bourbonnais, IL

Primary Animals Raised: Poultry

Founded by Jeff and Paige Lambert in Kankakee, Illinois, Songbird Hill Farm began with a simple backyard flock and a quest for “real chicken” grown outdoors. In 2016 they turned that passion into a full-scale pasture-based poultry operation rooted in the belief that healthy soil heals the land, and healthy pastures lead to better flocks. At Songbird Hill the birds are moved daily to fresh ground, their diet is enriched by natural forage and carefully sourced non-GMO feed, and every rotation is designed with the land in mind. Their mission is two-fold: deliver exceptional flavor to your table and rebuild the ecosystem beneath your plate.

Raising Practices:

  • Pasture-Raised Poultry: Chickens live outdoors on open pasture year-round, where they enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and natural forage. The birds are moved daily to new ground, never spending more than 24 hours in one spot, to maintain clean conditions, high welfare, and exceptional flavor. Their diet naturally includes grasses, seeds, and insects from the pasture, resulting in richly flavored, nutrient-dense meat.
  • High-Quality Non-GMO Feed: Chickens receive a complete, balanced ration from a trusted Illinois mill made with non-GMO grains, kelp meal, oyster shells, probiotics and essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Soil-First Pasture Management: Songbird Hill Farm’s pastures are managed with a deep focus on soil health. Regular testing, mineral balancing, and the use of diverse cover crops including grasses, legumes, and brassicas, help build fertility and resilience over time. Mobile chicken shelters are rotated daily, spreading natural manure evenly across the land to enrich the soil, support plant diversity, and strengthen the farm’s ecosystem for future flocks.
